ORGANISING A FUNDRAISING COLLECTION

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN FUNDRAISING

  1. Where – supermarket / church gate / street collection / door to door / counter top

  2. When - when the collection is taking place

  3. Permit requirements – this will depend upon the type pf collection and the location

  4. Third party approval – for example church gate / supermarket etc

  5. Collectors – need to consider age, apparel and manner

LOCATION

Different rules apply to different locations in the UK. These are broken into England & Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

There are legal requirements set out in the law, primarily dictated by:

  • House to House Collections Act 1939

  • House to House Collections Regulations 1947 (“the Regulations”)

  • House to House Charitable Collections Act (Northern Ireland) 1952

  • House to House Charitable Collections Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1952 & 1953

  • Model street collection regulations contained in the Charitable Collections (Transitional Provisions) Order 1974

  • Police, Factories, etc. (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1916

  • Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982

  • Public Charitable Collections (Scotland) Regulations 1984

Also, where there is a voluntary Code of Conduct. It would be advisable to adhere to these practises.
